In "Hunting Palismen", the duo are forced to work together to regain the stolen palismen. After realizing that Kikimora wants to kill Hunter, she saves his life, even though she makes it clear that she doesn't like him. Hunter is hurt that Belos tricked him about the Titan and that Belos doesn't really care about him, and Hunter sees the masks of all the Golden Guards. When he and Luz are confronted by Belos, they find out that the being chasing them is a manifestation of palismen souls and that the inner Belos has been with them the whole time, and they watch in horror as Belos destroys the souls. At that point Hunter no longer denies what he has seen and asks Belos what really happened and that the whole thing about their family being destroyed by wild magic was also a lie. Belos tells Hunter that he is a Grimwalker and the one who looked the most like "him" and seemingly gets rid of him. Hunter appears again and protects Luz from Belos (who is really Philip Wittebane) where he finally says Luz's name for the first time, and they both escape from Belos' mind. Hunter is shocked, hurt and confused that everything he thought and believed in Belos and himself were all a lie, Hunter then throws away his cloak and runs away in panic after finally seeing the truth.

King then sends Luz and her friends away to the Human Realm to protect them from the Collector's games.[16] As he spends time with the Collector as his chosen playmate, King comes to understand that he is misguided rather than malicious and discourages Eda and Lilith from attempting to reimprison him. Upon Luz's return, King and Eda reunite with her and aid her in befriending the Collector and destroying Belos once and for all. In the epilogue, King's developing Titan powers allow him to create a new glyph system, which he begins to teach Luz. In “For the Future”, Hunter begins to act like he did as the Golden Guard, becoming no nonsense and cold as he was before and solely focused on his mission to stop Belos and the Collector.
In "Eclipse Lake", Emperor Belos implies that Hunter's failure from the events of "Hunting Palismen" is the reason he switched Hunter with Kikimora to gather Titan's Blood. This makes Hunter believe he is going to be replaced, and he tries to get to Eclipse Lake before Kikimora. This causes him to have a mental breakdown, as he thinks he has failed again, and starts digging his own grave. Though Emperor Belos was somewhat familiarly attached to Hunter, the genuineness of this relationship is, in fact, a pretense Belos puts in order to keep Hunter devoted to him. Soon, they see Belos rebuilding the portal and watch Hunter give Belos the key. After Hunter leaves, he is surprised to learn that Belos has destroyed the other Golden Guards.
Darius tasks him with aiding Luz and King in freeing the three Blight siblings and he has Gus and Willow join them. As Luz is about to say what he is, he interrupts her and pulls her aside to say he has yet to tell them he is a grimwalker and does not walk to. After fighting off the guards and liberating the Blight children, they head to the factory. Emira and Edric break away as Gus disguises them as Coven Scouts with King leaving as well.
Belos was the one who mentored Hunter, giving him a staff with artificial magic at some point in time. This eventually leads to Hunter becoming Emperor Belos' right-hand man, and the boy being chosen as Lilith's replacement as Head of the Emperor's Coven. The resulting crash leaves the Golden Guard unmasked, unconscious, and vulnerable, but Luz is unable to leave him to die at Kikimora's hands and subsequently slaps the guard awake. Even though he does not fully trust the human, the Golden Guard leaves his cloak as bait for the dragon while he and Luz escape to Latissa. He immediately storms over to one of Latissa's police precincts to contact the castle and shows his coven brand as proof.
