Outside his connection with Belos, Hunter showcases insecurity and bitterness about being a powerless witch, as he relies solely on his artificial magical staff, causing him to act a little harshly and defensive at times, especially towards Luz, his enemy. While he is indeed her enemy, he is not above trying to help her after she helped him as thanks. Eventually, he learns to bond with the palisman after he hears him say his name, Flapjack. In season two, it is shown that Bump openly enjoys Luz's presence at the school but is forced by the Blights to expel her, Gus, and Willow, despite not wanting to. When they attempt to get back into school, he is upset at having to prevent them from entering, and that he thinks life was dull without them.[8] "Hunting Palismen" reveals that the devil "hat" on his head is actually his palisman Frewin, which allows him to see due to an unspecified incident in his youth. After the students defeat Graye and the Emperor's Coven, Bump gets them to leave by stating that he would tell Emperor Belos that they were defeated by children.[47] He is captured by the Collector after the events of "King's Tide" and the remaining Hexside students create a statue in his honor, though he is later revived.

Eventually, Luz tells Hunter that she thinks of him as family, which makes him break down in tears, meaning that he feels the same way about her. When the two first met, he displayed a playful, but antagonist attitude toward her, and made it clear that they were enemies, but insisted that she obey him for her and Eda’s sake. When Luz told him that Kikimora was after him and that she wanted to help, he refused to believe her until he saw for himself, and even so refused her help, until he was left without options. After finding they had similar interests in magic, Hunter opens up to Luz about his life and how Belos took him in, he then gains Luz’s trust only to attempt to betray her afterward, but when Luz tells him that she thought of him as a friend, he relents and tells her his name then allows her to leave while covering her escape. Hunter doesn’t interact much with the students and feels embarrassed being introduced to everyone by Gus, instead he bides his time waiting for Luz to find the memory of her witnessing the teleportation glyph being used by Belos to enter the Titan’s skull.

After joining the resistance, Hunter now wears a pale rose-colored undershirt covered by a collared light brown shirt bearing a cross-stitch in the center, as well as a brown belt bag. My problem with Luz x Hunter is how fast people are/were willing to ship Luz with a man. Like imagine watching a show where the soon to be canon ship is a WLW relationship but people are shipping one of the WLWs with a man. The problem is we finally get a canon WLW relationship in a Disney show but people would rather ship Luz with a man.

When he reunites with Luz in "Clouds on the Horizon", they are more sympathetic with each other. While Luz is at first concerned about Hunter in the events following "Hollow Mind", Hunter reveals he knows who Belos is and that Luz unknowingly helped him because he overheard Luz and Philip's conversation, however, he also empathizes with how Luz feels about it, and in return asks her to not tell Willow or Gus about his grimwalker nature in respect to his wishes. After Luz inadvertently traps the two in Belos' mind, Hunter is forced to acknowledge the negative aspects of Belos.

A week before the Day of Unity, Hunter is scouting out Bonesborough when he sees three figures trying to enter his uncle's mind. After Luz finds him, she steps on a potion and they two end up in Belos' mind. They fall through a painting and find themselves in a forest of dead trees with memory paintings on them.
Upon hearing him say it, Gus reveals he has been reading Cosmic Frontier books he found in the basement, Hunter also takes an interest in the series after Gus describes a clone character, Chief Engineer O'Bailey. As they walk, Gus questions why Hunter is helping him as Hunter starts to lose his composure and Gus shows him a breathing exercise. The scouts restrain Gus and they tell him Belos has been worried sick about him and offer to escort him back to the palace.
In the epilogue of "Watching and Dreaming", Hunter's hair has grown out slightly further, and he no longer has bags under his eyes. Additionally, a red tattoo of a cardinal covers the place on his right wrist where his coven sigil had previously been to symbolize the loss of Flapjack. He declined to provide details, including whether the suspect intended to harm the mayor. "Most of the break-ins that occur are done overnight, under cover of darkness," Thomas said. "To have someone break in during early morning hours is kind of surprising."
